What matters when selecting dedicated hardware?

A CPU model alone is not enough. Evaluate memory, storage and networking together.

Match the CPU to the workload

Parallelism matters as much as core count. A single-threaded service and many independent jobs may behave differently on the same CPU. Consider the model, generation and sustained-load behaviour together.

Memory and storage

Choose memory for the data set and cache requirements. Storage capacity, I/O profile and endurance matter. RAID can improve availability, but it does not replace independent backups.

Networking and operational scope

Port speed is not necessarily sustained available bandwidth. Confirm traffic allowances, IP scope, remote access and fault handling. Do not assume an undocumented feature is included.

Before deciding

Turn the technical scope into a written checklist. Comparing each option with the same application data reduces ambiguity caused by product labels. Record a baseline and repeat the test under the same conditions after changes.

  • Measure CPU, RAM and disk waits during peak periods.
  • Verify management, backups, licensing and network limits.
  • Define scaling and rollback plans before installation.
